The name Trabzon derives from the ancient Greek "Trapezous", most likely linked to the table-like shape of the local terrain. The city is ancient, with a history stretching back more than 2,500 years.

Trabzon's climate is mild and humid year-round under the Black Sea's influence. Summers are pleasant (typically 20–28°C) with occasional rain, while winters are mild on the coast and cold and snowy in the highlands.
